Who is Behind Pilates Republic?
Pilates Republic is a company formed by Sandra Igel, a Pilates instructor, certified in the Romana's pilates method, something she is proud of, as Romana herself was known as the Pilates' protege.
Currently she teaches in her own home in Tooting and online. |
What are the Benefits of Pilates?
There are many benefits to Pilates. Mainly it will strengthen while stretching your muscle. The focus is on a group of muscles called the Powerhouse which aids the body to be more upright, so better posture is a big one.
Everyone including athletes can gain better alignment in their body which can help with their own training. Injuries can be prevented or strength regained after an injury. Pilates is all about mind, body and soul, which means tension and stress release can be further benefits.

Is Pilates Right for Me?
Pilates is for everybody! Young and old, athletic or injured, male or female. As we are comprehensively certified, meaning we have been trained on all Pilates apparatus and have worked with people from all walks of life, we are confident that we are able to give you a workout, that takes your own personal needs and physical attributes into consideration throughout your session.
What Happens at the First Session and What Happens After?
All sessions:
We will go through some general health questions, then show you the space, we will explain the equipment and off we go. At the end we will discuss any feedback and how you would like to continue.
Your wellbeing is most important to us, so even when you have come to see us for years, we will still ask you how you have been and how your body is. Why? We will tailor each session to your condition on the day.

Mat vs Apparatus?
Joseph Pilates created the equipment and GRATZ manufactured them. These Pilates apparatus were developed to add resistance to the movements with the use of springs. The springs mimic closely a muscular contraction. Apparatus helps to target specific weaknesses and body issues of different body types. Different parts of the kit will help balance out the body by targeting weaker or less flexible parts of the body.
Private Sessions vs Group Equipment Sessions?
It will depend on your physical condition. Generally we do not recommend exercising in groups with an active injury (consistent pain when moving and swelling).
Call or email Sandra if you would like to discuss the best option for you.

What to Wear and Bring to the Session?
Comfortable gym attire is suggested, with no zippers, something not excessively baggy where your instructor can see your neck and your ankles. Please wear a pair of socks, as no shoes are needed.
How Many Times a Week Should I Do Pilates?
Pilates can be practiced every day. If you are very active, then 1-3 Pilates sessions a week will enhance what you are already doing. Every person has different issues or limitations, goals and needs. Doing something, even once a week, is better than doing nothing at all!
Sandra will show you short sequences and stretches that you can do at home easily and without needing much time. Taking Pilates into your daily way of living helps to retain the sense of wellbeing and keeps you tall and strong.

Will I Shape Up and Lose Weight with Pilates?
Eating a healthy diet, reasonable portions, making lifestyle changes, seeking professional help when you need it and of course, exercise, are just a few of the components of successful weight loss. If Pilates is part of the above, then it can result in weight loss. Pilates may change the shape of your body – your posture may become better, and so you may appear taller and tighter around the midsection and around your bottom and hips.
What is the Difference Between Pilates and Yoga?
Yoga is a spiritually based movement practice that uses breathing, meditation, chanting and stretching of the body by focusing the mind to achieve enlightenment. The more popular types of yoga use the technique of moving slowly into a pose and holding the pose while taking slow deep breaths.
Pilates is a secular movement practice (meaning it has no religious affiliation). Pilates uses the ideas of stretch and strength while moving with control. Stability and mobility teaches practitioners how to prevent injuries even when they are doing very complex actions (like ballet or surfing) and the focus is fitness. Pilates is dynamic - we rarely hold positions, we constantly move through exercises.
The 'mind' and mental aspect of Pilates is not to be underestimated though. Joseph Pilates believed in “strong mind, strong body.” The brain and the body must work together to achieve strength, balance and health. A great deal of concentration, control and focus is needed for following Pilates techniques and instructions. You will learn that constructive application of techniques paired with mind focus gives great results. Pilates can engage and improve your perseverance and concentration for the life outside the studio too. Besides, it is much more fun and engaging when you put your mind to it!

Can I Do Pilates While Being Pregnant?
The rule of thumb is not to start a new exercise routine when you are pregnant.
If you were doing Pilates before you became pregnant, than you can certainly continue so long as you and your physician feel there are no other complicating factors in your pregnancy. Your routine will change as you progress and we will encourage you to listen to your body to make sure your Pilates regime still feels as lengthening, straightening and strengthening as it did before.

When Should I Start Pilates after Pregnancy? - Post Natal Pilates
Sandra recommends to start Pilates again after getting clearance from your doctor or midwife. If all went well, this could be as early as around week 6-8 after birth. Don't rush it though as you want to feel truly up for it. Listen to your body, as it may give you a sense of when to return to movement and exercise.
Start with private sessions and this way Sandra can look after you and ensure you have a great return into moving and increasing your fitness levels.

Who are Joseph, Clara, Romana, Sari and Daria?
Joseph Pilates invented this unique movement system, that he himself called 'Contrology'. After Joseph's death in 1967 his system, with over 500 stretching and strengthening exercises was renamed 'Pilates'.
Clara was his wife, who worked alongside Romana after Joseph PIlates' death. Romana came to know Joe and Clara when she was 17, as their studio and method was recommended to help her with an ankle injury. Romana continued working alongside Joseph and Clara and eventually started a training school named 'Romana's Pilates'. Her daughter Sari and granddaughter Daria continue to train the best teachers all over the world. Their mission is to be as pure and close to the original method as possible.
